Congrats to Our Boston Globe Scholastic Writing Award Winners!

We are pleased to announce that several of our high school students have earned recognition in the prestigious Scholastic Writing Awards, co-sponsored by The Boston Globe and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. Categories in the contest include dramatic script, flash fiction, humor, journalism, personal essay/memoir, persuasive writing, poetry, novel writing, science fiction/fantasy, and short story. Judges look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. Recognition is awarded in three levels of distinction at the regional level: Gold Key, Silver Key, and Honorable Mention. Work is judged on originality, technical skill, and emergence of a personal voice or vision.

The winners are as follows:

Silver Key:

  • Shaima Azam winning in the personal essay/memoir category for her piece entitled Transcendentalism Inspired Essay
  • Owen Bailey winning in the critical essay category for his piece entitled The Influence of Henry David Thoreau on Martin Luther King
  • Isidora Martin winning in the personal essay/memoir category for her piece entitled My Pet Reindeer
  • Hannah McGillicuddy winning in the critical essay category for her piece entitled Henry David’s Thoreau’s Influence on Martin Luther King
  • John Mucci-Riley winning in the short story category for his piece entitled Red Road

Honorable Mention:

  • Owen Bailey winning in the flash fiction category for his piece entitled The Fields
  • Connor Bryan winning in the flash fiction category for his piece entitled The Captain
  • Louis Chin winning in the critical essay category for his piece entitled Analysis: John Updike’s “A & p”
  • Rachel Elliot winning in the science fiction/fantasy category for her piece entitled Until it Comes Back
  • Ramon Fernandes winning in the critical essay category for his piece entitled Henry Dvaid’s Thoreau’s Influence on Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • Sean Freeman winning in the short story category for his piece entitled Trenches
  • Ivy Ho willing in the personal essay/memoir category for her piece entitled Strings
  • Erik Lam winning in the personal essay/memoir category for his piece entitled Brothers
  • Anthony Lecesse winning in the personal essay/memoir category for his piece entitled The Golden Chain
