On March 28 the Medford High Robotics Team brought “Scooby-Doo” & “Shaggy”, their two robots, to the University of Massachusetts Lowell for the Botball New England Regional Robotics Tournament.
The team’s performance was remarkable and exceptional. They received three awards at the tournament. Medford finished SECOND overall out of 24 teams. The overall winners are determined by Double Elimination rank, Seeding Round Scores and Online and Onsite Documentation Scores. The team also finished SECOND in Double Elimination Rounds. In DE round, robots from two different teams compete on the game board simultaneously in an effort to score as many points as possible. Also, they are allowed to keep their opponent from scoring. The DE placement makes up about one-third of the overall score. Medford finished THIRD in Seeding Rounds. In Seeding, teams run their robots unopposed and attempt to score the most points possible. The Seeding Round scores determine initial placement in the Double Elimination bracket and account for about one-third of each team’s overall score.
The Robotics team is led by Ms. Barbara Chyen, Medford High School mathematics teacher and Robotics Team advisor. There are thirteen members in the team. They are 9th Graders Sarah Abdulkerim, Kaela Malone, Dominic Mase, & Scott Ranjanathan; 10th Graders Matthew Avella, Ronaldson Bellande, Joseph Farah (Programming Team Co-Leader), Scott McGoldrick, & Andrew Sauro, 11th Graders Serena Do (Programming Team Co-Leader), Christopher Ellis (Mechanic Team Leader), & Simon Ospenson; and 12th Grader Chanel Thomas. Congratulations!
