Medford junior Captain Ashley Eisnor opened up the softball season in amazing fashion with a dominating no-hitter that included fourteen strikeouts and no walks against Greater Boston League arch rival Malden. The Mustangs defeated the Golden Tornadoes, last season’s league co-champ, 9-0.
This was the first game of the season for the local nine after the first five games were postponed due to bad weather and field conditions. This made the performance by the Medford girls and their ace hurler quite remarkable since they were unable to play any exhibition games or even get on a field outside of the MHS gym to practice or play on until last Saturday.
Eisnor augmented her outstanding pitching performance with some good offense, including 3 hits and 2 RBI’s. Senior captain Brianna Napoleone banged out 4 hits (3 base hits & 3 singles) along with 3 RBI’s and a stolen base. Senior captains Bailey Flynn (2 hits, 2 stolen bases, 1 RBI) and Julia Kearney (2 hits, 2 RBI’s and 1 run scored) also came up big for the Lady Mustangs.
Freshman Halle Farrell contributed a big hit that drove home a couple while seniors Mary Donnelly and Julia Mitrano chipped in with a bingle a piece. Juniors GiGi Braga and Renee Staude both banged out base hits for the home team.
The Lady Mustangs will continue with a grueling start to their season when they take on the defending Eastern Mass North Champiom Revere Patriots in Revere on Thursday.
The Medford girls are hosting the second annual Krystle Campbell Softball Tournament at Columbus Park this weekend with opening ceremonies starting at 10:30 am on Saturday. The first game is at 11am with Medford playing Swampscott while Arlington Catholic and Billerica will play at 2PM. Championship and consolation games will follow on Sunday. Proceeds from the event support the Krystle Campbell Medford Strong Scholarship Award.
