Wednesday’s weather
On Wednesday morning the unexpected flash freezing complicated bus routes and all forms of travel to our schools.
We appreciate the efforts of the DPW and school personnel to respond to the issues that occurred during the commute. We recognize that this morning may have been unsettling for parents and students but a late cancellation of school would have caused difficulty as parents would have had to scramble to find coverage for their children. No student will be marked tardy for arriving late to school today.
Our complex busing routes keep us from having delayed school openings. Further, since today was a half day, a delayed opening would have made the instructional day entirely too short.
It is always our priority to ensure safety for our students and staff. We thank all of you who assisted us this morning in transporting students to school. We are working with our bus company and others to review today’s events so that if any modifications are possible, we will incorporate them going forward.
Once again thank you for your understanding and patience.
NO SCHOOL Thursday, February 9, 2017
The latest weather forecasts for Thursday indicate that we’re going to be dealing with a severe winter storm. Snow accumulation is expected to be up to one foot.
Therefore, we are making the decision early today to cancel the Medford Public Schools for Thursday, February 9, 2017. We want to give everyone sufficient time to make alternative plans and to ensure the safety of our school community.
We will evaluate weather and cleanup conditions on Thursday to determine if school is feasible on Friday, February 10, 2017. An appropriate announcement will be forthcoming once sufficient information is available to us.
We ask that older, capable youth assist elderly neighbors and the infirm with snow removal. Please shovel your sidewalks after the storm so our students will have safe passage to school and to bus stops.
For our history buffs, this week is the anniversary of the Blizzard of 1978, which paralyzed the Commonweath for over a week.
Stay safe and warm!
